Looking to maintain your electric bike this summer, but unsure where to start or how to go about it? The Unikride team shares 5 tips for riding safely and making the most of the sunny days.
What do we mean by “maintaining your electric bike” in summer?
We agree, maintaining your bike is a year-round job. But summer means heat and sunshine, which means more rides and more regular trips!
However, high temperatures and the sun can put a strain on certain components of your electric bicycle (EAB), particularly the battery, brakes and tires.
These elements therefore require you to redouble your efforts regarding the maintenance of your e-bike: protect the battery from the sun, check the tire pressure, the paintwork or any accessories subject to weather conditions and your more frequent use.
Our 5 tips for extending the life of your electric bike
1. Protect your battery from the sun
The battery, the essential element of your e-bike. Without it, goodbye to assisted pedaling 😉
You probably already know this, but a lithium-ion battery doesn't like extreme cold... or extreme heat. When it's exposed to temperatures above 35-40°C (which happens quickly in a vehicle trunk or outside in direct sunlight), its performance can drop , or even be damaged , and you'll have to replace it (too) regularly.
Therefore, if the battery becomes too hot, this will lead to overheating causing irreversible damage (degradation of electronic components, reduced autonomy and malfunctions).
💡 As a reminder, a lithium-ion battery has a lifespan of approximately 5/6 years. Exposure to this type of risk can significantly reduce this data.
Our advice:
-
If you store your bike outside, choose shade where possible .
-
Ideally, remove the battery and keep it in a dry, cool place.
-
For long stays, use an anti- UV tarpaulin or an insulated cover .
❗Charge your battery at room temperature
Never recharge immediately after a long journey in hot weather: let the battery cool for a few minutes .
It is recommended to charge your battery in a cool place, between 10°C and 25°C , to preserve its life cycles.
2. Check your tires and their pressure
Tires are in direct contact with the asphalt. When it's hot, the asphalt absorbs all this heat and the tires suffer the consequences: increased pressure, risk of punctures, premature wear, etc.

Our advice:
-
Check the pressure at least once a week in summer - depending on your usage.
-
Adjust the pressure according to your weight and the type of journey (urban, off-road, cargo, etc.), our teams can advise you if necessary.
-
Regularly inspect tire sidewalls and treads for signs of fatigue, cracks, or bulges.
Unikride tip : always inflate your tires when cold , in the morning for example, for greater reliability 😉
3. Maintain your brakes for safety
Unikride electric bikes are all equipped with hydraulic disc brakes . They provide more consistent and efficient braking than mechanical brakes. However, with the heat, careful maintenance is recommended.
Our advice:
-
Clean the discs regularly with a clean cloth and a suitable degreaser .
-
Monitor the level of wear on the pads (especially after journeys with steep descents).
-
If you experience a high-pitched noise or feel the brakes are uneven, adjustment or replacement may be necessary.
4. Clean your bike more often
In summer, dust, sand, salt (near the sea) or insects quickly accumulate on the frame, forks and electrical components.
As with a car or any other outdoor vehicle, Maintaining the surface of your electric bike is essential : it preserves its appearance , prolongs its lifespan and guarantees safe riding comfort .
Our advice:
-
Clean with lukewarm water , a soft sponge and neutral soap .
-
Never use a high pressure jet , this may damage the connectors.
-
Dry your bike thoroughly (and especially the battery contacts ) before storing or charging.
5. Adapt your equipment and your schedule
If you're hesitant to take your e-bike out at times due to heat, apprehension, or less comfortable conditions , a few simple adjustments can make all the difference .
By adapting your outing times and choosing the right equipment , you can fully enjoy your VAE while avoiding the inconveniences linked to high temperatures.

Our tips:
-
Favor (if possible) outings early in the morning or at the end of the day , when the temperatures are more bearable.
-
Wear a well-ventilated helmet , breathable technical clothing and sunglasses with UV protection .
-
Remember to hydrate regularly , even on short journeys.
At Unikride, we offer a complete checkup of your e-bike, whether it's before going on vacation, heading back to school, or simply for your daily commute. Pressure, brakes, motor, battery: everything needs to be checked to ensure safe and comfortable rides.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about maintaining your electric bike
▶️ Can I leave my electric bike in direct sunlight?
It is strongly recommended not to leave an electric bike exposed to direct sunlight for several hours. Heat can damage the battery, expand certain components (hydraulic brakes, tires), and accelerate overall wear. Always choose a shaded location or use a protective cover.
▶️ Should you inflate your tires differently in summer?
Yes, heat can increase internal tire pressure. It's advisable to check your pressure more frequently in summer and adjust it according to your weight, terrain type, and bike model. Perform checks when the tires are cold, preferably in the morning.
▶️ What are the risks of riding an electric bike at 35°C?
Riding an electric bike in hot weather increases the risk of battery overheating, reduced braking efficiency (especially hydraulic brakes), and accelerated tire wear. It is recommended to take regular breaks, ventilate the battery well, and be on the lookout for signs of decreased performance.
▶️ How do I lubricate my electric bike chain in summer?
A well-lubricated chain is essential in summer, when dust and sand are more likely to infiltrate. After each long ride or ride on dusty terrain, clean the chain with a specific degreaser, then apply a suitable lubricant. Avoid over-lubricating: wipe off any excess to limit dirt buildup.
▶️ Can I ride an electric bike in the rain in summer?
Yes, but with caution. Electrical components and hydraulic braking are protected against moderate rain, but avoid prolonged immersion or high-pressure applications. Dry brake discs and connectors thoroughly after use to prevent corrosion and reduced efficiency.
